Data Literacy in Schools launching this week

We are delighted this month to see the launch of a recent project of ours. Data Education in Schools’ - part of the University of Edinburgh - commissioned us to produce a series of educational, engaging, and interesting videos to support teachers in developing foundational data literacy skills and help them have a full understanding to be able to incorporate data learning into their curriculum delivery. And now the project is out in the wild.

Data Education in Schools’ challenge was to grab teachers’ attention and demonstrate the benefits and learning potential of using data as part of their teaching. A subject which is easy to embed into classroom learning when you know how.

We worked closely with the university team to initially take their key points and mould them into an accessible and engaging script, broken down over an 11-part short modular video series in 3 minute episodes.

Next, our pre-production team developed the storyboards and this brought together the required messaging, which was the visual concept of how we would deliver the information concisely. We created a look and feel for the videos and tied this in with the brand of the department.

At this point in the project we hit a stumbling block, COVID restrictions ruled out working in schools completely, so we had to get creative! By using our studio we were able to film young people, data specialists and teachers on green screen and the post production team worked their magic to add backgrounds, graphics and integrate photos. After filming, the post-production team then created the graphics and animated assets which were then all brought together to create the finished product.

These videos are now being used by the department to promote the message to teachers in primary and secondary schools and will support the theory and practice of embedding data literacy throughout the delivery of the curriculum.
