Podcasting… It’s only Getting Bigger!

We have a new podcasting studio!

Why does that matter? Read on to find out…

Podcasting has enjoyed something of a resurgence over the last few years and is a format that thrived during the pandemic as it was an easy way to collaborate and create content in the resultant isolation periods we all experienced. In fact, many of us will have started listening to podcasts during those periods of isolation as a way to fill all this extra time we found ourselves with and the weekly releases became something to look forward to.

Following the return to “normal”, podcasting has continued to grow in popularity in both video and audio formats, now with an estimated 460m+ active listeners, a figure that is predicted to continue to rise throughout this decade. Bear in mind there were “only” 274.8m listeners in 2019!

Why are podcasts so popular?

  • The rise of the smart speaker has meant that most people listen to a podcast at the same time as doing something else; podcasts have also become a listening go-to for those looking for something to keep them amused when exercising or commuting.

  • There is a podcast out there for you! Podcasts are a medium for creators to talk about things that interest them and about which they have some knowledge. This means that you can always listen to someone talking about the same things that interest you and at a time that suits you.

  • Podcasts are often educational, can serve a niche audience and many are delivered by experts in their field - At any given time, the top 100 podcast chart contains episodes hosted by highly regarded political or business professionals or are devoted to following sectoral advances and current affairs.

  • Podcasting can be in audio only or video format and shows can be created for a fraction of the cost of broadcast tv or radio production.

  • For clever creators, video podcasts can also be released in an audio-only format. As long as the content is relevant and engaging, there is an audience for both.

Podcasts are making money too! Ad revenue for podcasts will be more than £5 billion worldwide in 2023 and due to the way that we listen to podcasts, we rarely skip through ads, meaning they hit their intended audience almost every time. With the average listener exposed to an ad at least 3 times per episode, an average of only 1-2 advertisers per episode and relatively low investment, advertisers know that they get a great ROI compared to more traditional channels. Plus, the audience is listening to a podcast because they trust the creator, ergo the advertiser is already trusted.

The caveat is, as always, you need to know your audience and cater to them!
